Dr Appleton is Chief Innovation and Research Officer, SD Guthrie Berhard. He joined SD Guthrie R&D (previously known as Sime Darby Plantation) in 2010 and later held the position of Head of Biotechnology and Breeding, overseeing the development and commercialization of GenomeSelectTM and other genetics, breeding and biotechnology programmes. In 2020, he had the role as Head, Product Innovation and Development for Sime Darby Oils, before moving back to R&D in 2023 to take up his current position. Dr Appleton moved to Malaysia in 2008 on attachment to Universiti Malaya after working 5 years for MerLion Pharmaceuticals in Singapore as a Principal Research Scientist in Drug Discovery. He is a New Zealander with a PhD in Chemistry from The University of Auckland, New Zealand.
