With the expansion of the chemical industry over the last decade, the demand for cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to petrochemicals has increased significantly. Oleochemicals and biodiesel (OC/BD) are recognized as green solutions, derived from renewable oils and fats, offering a promising pathway to reducing reliance on petroleum-based products. Traditionally, OC/BD have been produced using energy-intensive chemical processes. In contrast, enzymatic production has emerged as an innovative and sustainable approach, leveraging lipase-catalyzed reactions that operate under mild conditions, eliminating side reactions, and streamlining downstream processing. This technology offers numerous advantages, including reduced energy consumption, operational efficiency, and process simplification. Additionally, advancements in enzyme immobilization, reactor design, and feedstock optimization have significantly enhanced the scalability and economic feasibility of enzymatic processes. With continuous innovation and optimization, enzymatic solutions are poised to redefine the future of OC/BD production, offering a sustainable and economically viable alternative for the industry.
