Phospholipids are the primary constituents of natural lecithin. They are essential components of all cell membranes and play a vital role in the absorption of fats and lipophilic nutrients, facilitating their transport into the bloodstream.
Thanks to their amphiphilic nature, phospholipids are ideally suited for the development of advanced delivery systems—most notably liposomes and emulsions—that significantly enhance the bioavailability of encapsulated actives. Emulsions enable the solubilization of lipophilic substances in aqueous environments, while liposomes encapsulate hydrophilic nutrients within their aqueous core. In addition, phospholipids are valuable nutrients themselves, serving as natural sources of essential fatty acids and micronutrients such as choline.
Phospholipid-based formulations can be readily incorporated into various supplement formats, including nutrient-enriched liquid concentrates, sprays, gummies, and other innovative product types. The quality of the phospholipids used is critical to achieving superior product performance. Unlike raw lecithin, the term "phospholipids" refers to a more purified form that is free from accompanying compounds such as triglycerides, free fatty acids, and carbohydrates. The use of highly purified phospholipids results in formulations with excellent physical stability, pleasant taste, and an attractive visual appearance.
This presentation will provide an overview of the characteristics and functions of lecithin and phospholipids, with a special focus on innovative applications in dietary supplements. Emphasis will be placed on their role both as active ingredients and as functional components in emulsions and liposomes.
