Almost 20 years have passed since the last DRI review for fat, including EPA and DHA, was published in its final version as Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrate, Fiber, Fat, Fatty Acids, Cholesterol, Protein, and Amino Acids. While the last DRI Panel on Macronutrients believed “Small amounts of EPA and DHA can contribute toward reversing an n-3 fatty acid deficiency and can therefore contribute toward the AI for α-linolenic acid,” no formal DRI was established for EPA, DHA, or a combination of EPA & DHA. Over the last two decades, the scientific support associated with the benefits of EPA and DHA has exploded and there are now over five thousand peer-reviewed publications reporting on the results of EPA & DHA clinical trials. This presentation will provide an overview of GOED’s efforts to bring attention to the expanded body of scientific evidence to support a successful DRI review for EPA and DHA.
