Market trends are moving towards bio- and bio-based surfactants as more sustainable, greener alternatives to petrochemical surfactants. As such, Dow has been executing fundamental research to understand the properties and cleaning performances of surfactants that contain sugar groups as hydrophiles. Within this class of materials, alkyl polyglucosides (APGs) have historically been sold into the industrial and home cleaning markets. The APG surfactants on the market are largely comprised of linear alkyl hydrophobes attached to a polyglucose hydrophilic head unit. This presentation will focus on research aimed at testing the hypothesis that alternate sugar-based hydrophiles and/or branched alkyl hydrophobes could significantly enhance the hard surface performances of linear APGs. Importantly, it is shown that blends of branched sugar surfactants improve the hard surface cleaning performances of commercial linear APGs greater than threefold. The research presented can be used to design sustainable hard surface cleaning products.
