Abstract:

Mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) traces in vegetable oils are in the focus of consumers and producers of edible oils due to discussions concerning possible genotoxicity of these compounds. MOAH standards (naphthalenes, alkylated naphthalenes, benzo(a)pyrene, and its alkylated homologues), spiked crude vegetable oil and the raffinate thereof from the work published in 2023 were tested for genotoxicity using the mini AMES test and the DNA Damage Response Test. The results provide valuable insights into the mutagenesis of individual substances as well as the applicability of said tests with regard to quantified levels of MOAH in refined and crude coconut oil.
